Day 47 - The Olive Oil Journey
Day 47
Chania --> Heraklion, GR | December 11th, 2022
If you watched today's day 47 Instagram Reel (btw shout out to the two people who liked my reels in the past 2 days...record lows - I guess the Linkin Park vibes doesn't resonate in 2022) you could see mostly food pictures. And this is for a reason.
I woke up and got out of Chania to start my drive to Heraklion. First stop was a mill that I had mistakenly thought was high-end but rather some middle of the road mill...not for me. No English spoken - cherry on top.
There was a lake nearby that I wanted to see so I drove over but as I pulled up the rain started coming down...hard. Visibility went down and my would-have-been great pictures turned into try and capture something colorful. The rainbow was too faint and the backdrop completely went away. At least the body of water retained the blue color.
I was pretty hungry and found a restaurant on the other side of the lake serving freshly roasted meats. I was so excited.
Until the waiter told me those meats aren't ready for another 2 hours...bummer, but no shot I was waiting. The oil had 0 flavor so I went to my car to get better product and thereafter enjoyed my meal.
I continued towards Heraklion and stopped at another town on the way. Mill was closed, and I was still hungry and got some greek salad. Oil was rancid there too! And way worse than the previous restaurant! Ruined the greek salad to be frank.
Next stop was the parking lot in Heraklion then checked into the hotel, did a 50 minute Instagram Live (thanks to those who joined), relaxed, showered, and changed. Dinner was basically a little bit from different stops. Pork on a stick, corn on the cob, Yakisoba noodles, and freshly pressed juice.
Very very luckily I came across the place I'm sitting in right now. Full gaming facility with internet access. Feels so nice to be on a desktop again. The 3 days of blog then immediately fell asleep.
1 Olive Oil Takeaway
So I just posted on my Instagram story to avoid the brands going for the Buy 1 Get 1 Free deals running rampant on the internet.
What do I recommend?
Well it's not so easy. It's like asking what wine do you recommend? So many different factors.
But what I'll say is buy your typical whole foods / TJ's / costco extra virgin for cooking. When I get back to the states I'll taste test different oils and provide a better opinion.
Just these D2C brands doing the Bogo (buy 1 get 1 free) are very likely not selling you good oil. Been in bottle for quite some time, likely exposure to oxygen in the bottle. Me personally, I don't trust it. Your typical supermarket bulk orders will still be a better bang for your buck despite the attractiveness of a bogo deal...don't fall for it!
For drizzling oils - check out Olive Oil Lovers for some new releases. They offer plenty. Extravirginguy has nothing to hide.
