extravirginguy went viral

1,800,000 people and counting sought enjoyment from this post by some random stranger. If you don’t understand why (grandparents I’m talking to you), I’ll give you my take:

• Extravirginguy is funny name

• Extravirginguy is very olive oil specific - so identity matches the subreddit

• I sound rather authoritative and serious which contradicts the joke of the name

• Most Costco Oils are trash is a very controversial take (I stand by it)

• 700 oils and 40 factories is crazy

What this means for me?

Some marketing genius may have turned this into a new business. If I were still selling oil, I’d get a nice wave of new customers. But I’m focused on other endeavors as you know.

Here’s what I thought about today

I think I received 15-20 people asking for an oil recommendation today. I guess that problem is never going away. No matter how advanced technology gets or AI features that exist, the good ole oil recommendation problem is real.

What’s weird is I do have a solution for all these people, but it requires a conversation that isn’t really worth my time.

Here’s my thought. It may sound crazy but it’s the obvious solution to me. If anyone wants to help me build it HMU.

Problem: person has trouble figuring out olive oil to buy

Solution: person goes to my page and sees link for purchase tool. They click link. They get to a website that mimics a type form. The main question is what are priorities:

• Location of origin

• Price

• Microplastics

• Organic

• Use Case

• Desired Flavor Profile

• Purchasing Location (amazon, supermarket, etc)

All multiple choice.

Output is top 3 oils recommended and why. Powered by trained AI model (using my own base dataset and trained as users flow in)

If user wants to learn more, they click learn more, with a full explanation of the brand and why it matches priorities.

Should I build it

For now, I will hold off.

• IMO requires a commitment to making olive oil content to get users — which is different than current focus. Breaking focus no good

• Focused on video at the moment. I’d do this only if another person wanted to get involved

• Monetization low (unless I can get affiliate links — which is effort lol)

I’m writing about this as a form of letting myself feeling like I made it without spending the time to make it.
