Fireworks
A Very Happy 4th of July
6:05pm. My lower back is slightly tight. I had a great morning workout which would typically keep me loose the rest of the day. But an intention of spending 1-2 hours on my computer turned into a whole day consumed by planning this trip.
I tell myself it’s time for some fresh air — go out and do something. Anything.
So in typical style, I check my Google Maps for the closest farms to my location, and off I go.
This time, unexpectedly, I hit pay dirt right away.
When I was living in Brooklyn, I walked to McCarren Farmers Market every Saturday rain or shine. There was one stand there that gave out samples of cured duck — and who knew that the Hudson Valley Foie Gras farm was 10 minutes from where I am staying. And better yet it’s one of the bigger poultry farms in NY State.
When I pulled onto the property, while the owner was out for the holiday, the workers living on property were making Mexican Meats outside — so I figure might as well go up to them and ask them about this place. Turns into a 15 minute conversation that ends with: “you know I’m doing fireworks later.” I then gave the “oh yeah, maybe I’ll come see them” without any intention of doing so.
I had too much shame in asking to join them for dinner. Not my place.
Well 2 hours later it’s 8:30pm and I had no plan for fireworks.
So I think to myself, how could I possibly invite myself to this family’s celebration?
A 6-Pack of Modelos — impossible to get turned down
Low and behold I arrive at 8:45pm sharp, Modelo’s in hand, just in time to hang out with not only the workers but their kids, wives, and parents as well. It was quite a family gathering that felt nice to be around.
And the food… my gd! I had no idea what I was signing up for. The Modelo’s not only granted me property access but also a proper Mexican Feast. Homemade Chicharon, Guacamole, Beans, Refried Beans, Cactus Salad, Rice, Tomatillo Salsa, and Pork Ribs. (I ate dinner before but had room for round 2)
While different than the dynamics of my own family, there is something sweet to a 6 year old hugging you scared of the fireworks. Little did he know I was a complete stranger but that’s besides the point.
I don’t think I’ll ever have a 4th of July like this again, so I’m thankful I got the experience.
After seeing so many grandiose 4th displays, it’s nice to get front row seat the backyard fireworks from a random family in the Catskills. Puts things into perspective.
Have a great weekend everyone.
