My First Acupuncture Experience

Quite a day

Today started with an insane 7am workout class. GTX LifeTime. Crazy instructor that just screams at you for an hour straight. It was exactly what I needed to get myself going this morning. However, this class was the exact reason the acupuncturist told me while I’m face down on the table - ohhhhh you tight! Now I’m wondering how athletes time their acupuncture sessions…

Do I believe in Acupuncture?

I will say, there is a submissive / hypnotic component to the treatment that I really enjoyed. I ceased all control of the situation. All I could focus on was my breath. Needles going into my skin and potentially causing a “Bee-sting” esque pain at times was completely out of my control. There was something relaxing about that component.

I also felt greater control over my muscles and was able to coerce a relaxed state both mentally and physically.

But the kicker for me was that I did it for the content. I was hired by the Acupuncture Studio to create their social media content. One component of that task was to source models willing to participate in the videos.

I did not want to put that time in to source models — so what did lazy content creator me do?

Face Acupuncture

Doing it for the content was so mentally freeing. It was never a yes or no decision — the answer was always a yes.

I’ll deal with the pain if it’s painful; I just want more content.

Most Painful Part

The acupuncture itself was totally fine. One of the needles right above my right ear was quite deep and I felt it — but I wouldn’t even call that painful.

Rather post-acupuncture he applied acupressure to the back of my neck and head, almost like how a chiropractor primes your neck to get cracked.

That one minute long pressure application combined with deep shoulder trap massages did it for me. I let out an audible sound that definitely won’t make it to their social media page.

Would I do it again?

I am neutral here. It’s not like I entered the treatment with an acute pain in my body and it magically went away. However I did enjoy the experience overall. If you have any questions I’m happy to answer them!

Tomorrow I’m headed to Staten Island for the first time in my life. Let me know if you have any recommendations for Italian Food there!
